Tokyo August Festival Information
Sanno Matsuri

Date Friday, August 2nd – Sunday, August 4th

Festival Description Japan’s leading artisans gather at Tokyo International Forum. The “Monozukuri Takumi no Waza Expo 2024” is an event showcasing the traditional craftsmanship and cutting-edge manufacturing that have illuminated Japan. You can not only see the excellent skills in various fields of clothing, food, housing, and crafts but also experience making things. A variety of plans are prepared for everyone to enjoy, including foreign visitors to Tokyo.
Kiyose Sunflower Festival
Date Tuesday, August 6th – Tuesday, August 13th

Location Shimokiyoto 3-chome, Kiyose, Tokyo (Ishii Farm | Kodera Farm)
Festival Description The Kiyose Sunflower Festival is an event where you can enjoy Tokyo’s largest sunflower field under the midsummer sun. Approximately 100,000 sunflowers bloom on a vast farmland of about 24,000 square meters, attracting many visitors every year. During the period, events such as photo contests are held, and fresh vegetables and sunflower flowers harvested from nearby fields are sold.
*Free shuttle bus service is available from the north exit of Kiyose Station. *No dedicated parking.
Asagaya Tanabata Festival

Festival Description Asagaya Tanabata Festival is one of Japan’s top three Tanabata festivals and is nationally renowned. During the period, colorful bamboo decorations appear from the south exit of JR Asagaya Station to the entrance of Ome Kaido, showcasing unique paper mache designs, large celebratory figures, and wind chimes. Various booths and stalls also line the shopping street, attracting many visitors every year.
Sumida River Lantern Floating

Location Azumabashi Bridge | Sumida Park
Festival Description During this traditional summer event, people float lanterns with their wishes down the river. In Asakusa, it takes place at Sumida Park. Lanterns are floated down the Sumida River from the Sumida River Terrace near Azumabashi Bridge. Those who wish to participate should apply to the Asakusa Tourism Federation or the Sumida Ward Tourism Association. The sight of the serene Sumida River adorned with beautiful floating lanterns is very soothing.
Fukagawa Hachiman Festival (Tomioka Hachimangu Annual Festival)
Date Sunday, August 11th – Thursday, August 15th

Festival Description Held once a year around August 15th, the Tomioka Hachimangu Annual Festival is also known as the Fukagawa Hachiman Festival and is considered one of the three major festivals of Edo. During the festival, spectators along the roadside sprinkle purifying water on the portable shrines, creating a unique and lively event. The festival features a harmonious blend of humor and energy, bringing the participants and spectators together. This year, 2024, the children’s portable shrine parade will be held on August 11th.
Tennoz Harbor Market
Date Saturday, August 17th – Sunday, August 18th

Festival Description Visit the TENNOZ HARBOR MARKET in the leisurely morning hours to discover rare and valuable items such as antiques, vintage fashion, and artist creations. Utilize your holiday morning differently from the afternoon to enjoy a rich experience. Since 2018, this morning market has been held in Tennoz, and since 2022, it has been regularly held at ‘Isle Shinagawa’. The market features several unique food trucks, so you can enjoy a variety of foods as well as shopping.
This event is conducted using the ‘Nightlife Tourism Promotion Subsidy’ from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the Tokyo Tourism Foundation.
Harajuku Omotesando Genki Matsuri Super Yosakoi 2024

Festival Description This is the largest Yosakoi festival in the capital region, blending the traditions of Kochi, the birthplace of Yosakoi, with the cutting-edge trends of Harajuku and Omotesando. Many dance teams from all over Japan, including Kochi and even overseas, participate, showcasing a vibrant and passionate dance stage.
58th Azabu Juban Noryo Festival
Date Saturday, August 24th – Sunday, August 25th
Time 15:00 – 21:00
Location Around Azabu Juban Shopping Street, Minato-ku, Tokyo
Festival Description Azabu Juban is known for its vibrant local shopping street, where modern high-rise buildings and numerous embassies create an international atmosphere. This Noryo Festival, held for over 50 years, is a hallmark of summer in Japan. “Noryo” means to enjoy the cool evening breeze. The festival features historical shops and trendy popular stores, offering a variety of local specialties and foods from around Japan. There are also events such as the Noryo Theater and Stage 10-BANG, making it a charming and friendly summer festival that cherishes the unique character of the Azabu Juban shopping street.
65th Tokyo Koenji Awa Odori

Location Tokyo, Suginami-ku Koenji
(Around JR Koenji Station and Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line Shin-Koenji Station, 8 venues)
Festival Description The Awa Odori, a traditional dance event originating in Tokushima Prefecture, has been held in Okinawa as a ritual to send off ancestral spirits and pray for family safety and prosperity. This famous Okinawan event is now held in Tokyo’s Shinjuku, becoming a staple of Shinjuku’s summer traditions. The energetic dance performed to the beat of large and small drums, combined with traditional instruments like the sanshin and chanted narratives, forms a spectacular parade that captivates all viewers. This lively dance festival in the heart of Tokyo brings joy and excitement to everyone.
